Reflection: "When designing the assignments and rubrics for this course, I tried to incorporate all elements of each assignment description into its rubric.  Further, I wanted the rubrics to be highly objective so that there would be no question between instructor and students about what score each assignment received.  One problem I discovered with this method of evaluation is that it resulted in two students earning the same score because they technically included all of the assignment elements and met the objective standards of quality, but there were clear differences in the quality of thinking and writing in the two assignments.  The differences were significant enough that I felt the students should not have received similar grades, but my rubric left me with no room for professional judgment.  This brought me back to my original goal in creating the rubric - to create an objective rather than subjective rating scale.  Upon reflection it is clear that I need to include some room for 'professional judgment' in the grading process so that the intangible components of quality can be accounted for in the final score.  In planning for Practical Applications assignments, I will take into consideration my experiences from last semester and try to create rubrics that have both objective and subjective components."
